Ottawa Youth Sexual Health Survey-- input needed!

Carleton University Master of Social Work students, in conjunction with Planned Parenthood Ottawa, are undertaking a group research project to help improve sexual health services in the Capital Region.  The MSW students designed a survey, with input from PPO and Insight Theatre youth, which is going live in December 2011.  Youths between the ages of 16-24 who live in Ottawa are encouraged to take the survey available here.

What is this project about?
This is a research study that wants to help make sexual health services better for youth in Ottawa. We want to hear from different youth between the ages of 16-24 living in Ottawa about their consensual sexual experiences and their good or bad experiences on accessing sexual health services.

Who is running this project?
A research team consisting of staff from Planned Parenthood Ottawa and students from Carleton University.

Who are the researchers?
The research is being conducted by five students in the Masters of Social Work program at Carleton University: Carolann Chevalier, Natalie Dias, Polly Leonard, Katrina Levasseur, and Katie Ratcliffe. The research team is supervised by Dr. Karen Schwartz from the Faculty of Social Work.

What do I have to do?
We are asking you to fill out an online survey that will be available from December 14th 2011 until February 14th 2012. The survey has several questions and takes 10-15 minutes to finish. You will be asked questions about how you get information about sex and where you go if you need help.

What will happen to this information?
This info will be used to improve sexual health programs in Ottawa. We will also share the results by writing reports and advising different groups, organizations and communities.

What are the risks?
Talking honestly about sex is never easy. It’s possible that you feel uncomfortable or unsure about the questions being asked. That’s okay and totally normal. If answering one of the questions happens to spark some discomfort, we provided a list places you can call if you need to talk or just have a question you want answered.

Will it be private?
Yes. You will not be asked your name. There will be no way of connecting you with the information you give us. This is private information and only the research team will be able to see your finished survey but we won’t know who filled it out.

How long will you keep my survey information?
All information will be responsibly stored until September 1st 2013.  After that, all data will be destroyed.

Do I have to fill out the survey?
No, you do not have to fill out the survey. You can also stop at any time. If there are questions you don’t want to answer, you can select the “prefer not to answer” checkbox. Also, at the end of the survey you can discard all of your answers if you wish. At that time, all of your information will be destroyed. Don’t worry, no one will be mad or upset with you if you don’t finish the survey.

Who do I contact if I have questions about the Ottawa Youth Sex Survey?
If you have any questions about the survey, the project or your ethical rights you can contact the appropriate people listed on the following page. We will also be given a list of places to call if you have more questions about your sexual health.
