Training

Interested in increasing your sexual and reproductive health knowledge? Looking for an excellent opportunity to meet and work with community partners committed to comprehensive sexual health education? If so, you might be interested in one of Planned Parenthood Ottawa’s training programs!

Each program below is offered to professionals in the community and to new PPO volunteers.

LEVEL 1: ORIENTATION AND VALUES

This 3.5-hour training session will introduce professionals and new volunteers to PPO’s programs, values, staff and office. The workshop will encourage participants to become aware of personal attitudes and values towards sexuality. A variety of interactive activities to encourage group discussion will be offered. Recognizing the importance of values, attitudes and beliefs in teaching and working in sexual health is particularly important for service providers.

This training is a requirement for all new PPO volunteers, board members and staff.

LEVEL 2: SEXUALITY AWARENESS PROGRAM

This 24-hour training program gives participants background knowledge and practical skills to help them deal with and understand issues of sexuality. Offered twice a year, it provides practical, up-to-date information and resources to educate and inform participants about sexual health issues.

All workshops are facilitated by PPO staff and professionals from the community. Tours of local sexual health care providers are also included in the training. A written exam is required for successful completion of the course, and a certificate is given upon completion.

This training program is required for all PPO community education and options support volunteers.

    Cost:
         $350

SAP is free to volunteers.  However, PPO does require a $150 cheque from each volunteer, which will be deposited in the event that that volunteer commitments are not met in the first year.  PPO is committed to making sure that finances are not a barrier to participation.


LEVEL 3: FACILITATION SKILLS TRAINING


This facilitation skills training is intended for all new PPO
Community Education volunteers. Learning styles, presentation skills and details of the Community Education program will be discussed and individuals will have an opportunity to practice their group facilitation skills. After this training, participants will enter into a mentorship process, where they will be able to observe and co-facilitate with trained Community Educators before giving presentations on their own. A manual and certificate will be provided.

All participants must have completed level 2: Sexuality Awareness Program

LEVEL 3: OPTIONS SUPPORT SERVICE TRAINING


This eye-opening training provides participants with the knowledge and values important for working as pregnancy options support counsellors. This pro-choice and sex-positive approach will provide participants with available community resources, knowledge about pregnancy, adoption, parenting and abortion. Also included are workshops on counselling skills and techniques, decision making, support, crisis counselling skills and multicultural sensitivity.

Certificates are given upon completion.

All participants must have completed level 2: Sexuality Awareness Program
